CIC biomaGUNE is developing image biomarkers to study new treatments for Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is one of the principal causes of death worldwide and the second most common one among the over 70s, affecting 13 million people all over the planet. Currently, there is no effective treatment for Alzheimer's available on the market, nor is there any reliable option for the early diagnosis of the disease. The diagnosis is therefore mainly based on clinical symptoms, which occur at later stages of the disease, when it is much too late for successful medical intervention. There is therefore an urgent need to identify new disease biomarkers to enable longitudinal and non-invasive monitoring of disease progression as the first step towards designing new treatment, diagnostic and theragnostic strategies based on the study of the pathophysiology of the disease and the mechanisms involved in its progression. The aim is also to develop new tools for assessing treatment response.

Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka 2021

Now in its 9th edition, the Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka Fair invites once again young people between 12 and 18 years old from the Basque Country and their teachers to develop scientific and technological projects. With the aim of helping young people and providing them with references close to the professional world of STEM, Elhuyar has already brought together a large group of researchers from the Basque Science and Technology network to advise them. In fact, more than 200 researchers have signed up for the 2021 Elhuyar Science Fair as advisors for young people. From CIC biomaGUNE, Vanessa Gómez-Vallejo, Head of the Radiochemistry Platform, participates in this edition as project evaluator.

Collective movement of nanorobots observed in vivo

Nanorobots are machines whose components are on the scale of nanometers (one millionth of a millimeter), and which can be designed in such a way that they can move autonomously in certain environments, be they artificial or natural. Although they are still in the research and development phase, hugely significant progress is being made to turn nanorobots into reality in medical practice. They have a whole host of applications: ranging from the identification and location of tumor cells, the release of drugs in specific parts of the body, to tissue engineering and cellular assistance in inflammatory responses. Among the various, most promising nanorobot systems are those that are self-propelled by catalytic enzymes. However, understanding the collective behavior of these nanorobots is crucial when it comes to progressing towards clinical practice.

CIC bioGUNE and CIC biomaGUNE facilities, recognised as Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS in Spanish) by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities

The CIC bioGUNE NMR laboratory in Derio (Bizkaia) has been included in the Map of Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS in Spanish), which is updated every four years. Similarly, ReDIB, a distributed network initially composed of the CIC biomaGUNE Molecular Imaging Facility (Donostia-San Sebastián) and the Advanced Infrastructure for Translational Imaging (Madrid), has been renewed as a member of this group of cutting-edge, top-quality research facilities.
These ICTS, recognised by the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Council of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, are unique or exceptional in their field, and have very high investment, maintenance and operational costs. The strategic nature and importance of this infrastructure warrants its availability for the entire R&D+i community.
ICTS are state-of-the-art R&D+i facilities which, either individually or on a coordinated basis, provide services for cutting-edge, top-quality research to be conducted. Furthermore, they facilitate the transmission, exchange and preservation of knowledge, the transfer of technology and the promotion of innovation.
